The Battle of Ilzha (1939, September 10)

The southern column reached the initial bases with great delay. The edge of the forest was under constant artillery fire. The planned movement of the 52nd Infantry Regiment to the German artillery positions in Grabovets was canceled around 4 a.m. The column was still quite stretched. At about 5 o'clock, the movement towards Zhehuva began. On the right flank, in the second line, the 52nd division was supposed to operate, which was retreating after the battle in Grabovets. Dobrava was taken at 6 o'clock. Suddenly, the 3rd squad joined the attack, which turned back from Ilzhi. Then Polish troops attacked the Alexander Forest, which was stormed.

Heavy German artillery fire and lack of support from their own artillery led to the fact that the attack of the southern column with heavy losses was stuck on the outskirts of Rzhekhov. That's how 1st platoon commander and cadet Jozef Kogut remembered that moment: Hell broke out. Bullets were constantly falling on our troops. The Germans had a well-organized defense. They were firing sideways at us from well-camouflaged positions. The German artillery wreaked havoc in our ranks, and we heard only a few guns with low fire efficiency. The charge has stalled. We were hiding in a potato field. The Germans constantly conducted concentrated fire from machine guns, artillery and anti-tank guns.

During the battle, Anthony Chvarka went on the attack with the infantry to help the soldiers who fell in battle. In the last moments of his life, he managed to write: Meldunek. Please inform General Pashkevich that I am seriously wounded and cannot continue my service.

An hour later, i.e. approximately on June 6, the attack of the northern column began. All the battalions had to attack in one line. All this had to be supported by artillery. Shortly after the attack on the Polish battalions, German artillery ignited a heavy fire on the outskirts of the Starakhovitsky forest. Initially, the attack was successful. The detachment occupied German positions on the Ilzha—Mazyar road, where a battery of anti-aircraft guns also crashed. Major Weisser, commander of the 1st squadron of the 22nd Anti-aircraft Artillery Regiment, was also killed. During the attack, Podkontsy and part of the Rehov Colony were captured, and after the 7th they moved towards the town of Mikhalov. The patrols reached Ilzha Mikhalov road. To the south, soldiers surrounded a German artillery squadron. The Germans were seen retreating from hill 246 and Pilatka. A retaliatory attack was launched, and several German tanks appeared in front of the troops. At about 9:30, German tanks entered an unprotected barge. The battle was over.
